The pediatrician recommended Gardasil for our teenage daughter, do you agree?
Yes! Approximately 75% of people will contact HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) during their lifetime. The Gardasil vaccine is recommended for females between 9-26 years old; to prevent 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts caused by high risk HRV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. It will not prevent disease by other HPV types. It is best to receive the series of three shots before becoming sexually active. Even if she has contracted HPV already the vaccine will be beneficial as it is unlikely she is infected with all four types. The most common side effects are pain and swelling at the injection site, nausea, dizziness and fainting. This vaccine is not a substitute for regular pap smears.
