Q&A with Dr. Patrick

My husband and I are planning a pregnancy, what should I know?

One of the most important things you can do now is to take 0.4mg of folic acid daily.  This will help to prevent spine and skull defects in your baby.  If you or your husband smoke, drink alcohol or use illicit drugs this is the time to quit.  It is best to be at a healthy weight when you conceive—This is true for both over and underweight women.  Be sure your vaccinations are up-to-date.  Lastly see your doctor if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, seizures, heart or kidney disease, or if you take any medications.
